Introduction
Ethnic Events is a Chicago based startup with the focus of making cultural exploration possible wherever we are. Ethnic Events is committed to global diversity and awareness and wants to create a platform where people can travel internationally right in their cities in the USA and experience a different culture without having to get on a plane.
The Challenge

Research Insights
During our kickoff meeting with the client, we identified some of the challenges that are facing as well as their current approach to addressing those problems. Reviewing those solutions brought up some questions on user behaviors such as:
-  How do users go about discovering cultural events?
-  What aspects of cultures do they enjoy the most?
-  What types of events do they attend mostly?
-  What is their behavior with online events?

We decided to start with a survey to quickly gather answers to those questions, some information on users, and validate some hypotheses.
Key takeaways from survey results:
-  Users are most likely to attend cultural events revolving around food and music.
-  Socializing, enjoyment, learning, & networking are the main reasons for users to attend events.
-  Facebook and Google are the main resources for users to find events
UX Audit
At the time, Ethnic Events was using a WordPress event template which wasn't perfectly suited for what they wanted to achieve. We performed a UX audit to pinpoint potential usability issues of the current website template, determining which parts of the site can improve, and created a list of ideas and recommendations to enhance the user experience.
Competitive and Comparable Analysis
Competitive analysis takeaways:
- Other event sites allow the users to save and follow an event
- A majority of the event sites used featured event categories such as Food, Music, Sports, & Holidays to highlight events.
- Most event websites use event cards that include an image, title, date & time, and add to favorite function.
- Meetup uses a calendar view to showcase events.
- Meetup and Facebook show how many people are attending an event.
